The Osmose technology

Now, the name Westerwälder Elektro Osmose only does not say a lot about the current production programme of the company in the Westerwald. What connects the company name, which is more than eighty years old, with today’s products, is the raw material – the clay from the Westerwald.

The Osmose technology, to which the company owes its name, consists in a suspension of the raw clay which, through the influence of electricity, is cleaned of the impurities, that is iron compounds and silicates. The clay substance obtained in the electro-osmotic-way, the so-called Osmose-clay, was mainly used in the electrical porcelain industry for the manufacture of high-voltage isolators and other electrotechnical products. It was the replacement for raw materials imported from England until then, namely for “blue-clay” and “ball-clay”.
